Foreigners’ bank accounts in Côte d’Ivoire: documents, process and fees
Full contents · 10 topics
Choose a personal product first; you need not visit 29 banks
BCEAO’s 29 June 2026 list has 29 banks, but a licence does not mean identical products for every foreign resident or visitor. Arrange two or three appointments based on residence, salary source and use, rather than asking only which is “easiest”.
Separate daily spending, salary and company use. Wallets support some payments but have different terms, limits and services from bank accounts. Orange Money and Orange Bank differ. Wallet registration does not automatically enable bank salary or international receipts.
Four options and their differences
This compares published conditions, not approval rates. The bank checks residence, nationality and funds case by case. Foreign remote opening not promised by the provider is not promised here either.
| Bank/route | Published difference | Meaning for you |
|---|---|---|
| Ecobank personal account | Separate resident/nonresident lists; foreign residents need residence evidence | State your status; a short-stay visa is not automatically residence evidence |
| NSIA online pre-opening | Online submission followed by advisor and branch signing | Pre-application is not wholly remote; confirm attendance |
| SIB Compte dépôt | Page lists age 21+, minimum XOF 50,000 salaried or 150,000 nonsalaried, with three latest payslips for salaried route | Product terms, not national adulthood/universal minimum; salary domiciliation arrangements need individual confirmation |
| SGCI/NSIA fee comparison | SGCI personal monthly example XOF 4,950 HT; NSIA ordinary account 5,400 TTC | Compare equivalent tax/product basis before calling one cheaper |
Prepare foreign-resident and nonresident files separately
If living/working locally, ask about resident personal accounts. If visiting without local residence files, explicitly ask whether a nonresident application is accepted. A passport plus tourist admission is not a complete resident file.
Start with Ecobank Côte d’Ivoire’s product page and NSIA Banque CI’s opening portal. Ecobank lists resident/nonresident file frameworks; NSIA describes pre-application, advisor appointment, branch documents and agreement. Acceptance depends on your status/product.
For long-term living/business, separately check Côte d’Ivoire residence application assistance ; banking and residence are separate procedures.
Prepare a file from Ecobank’s published list
Resident example: opening form/signature card, valid ID, address proof and two photos; foreign residents also list residence permission. Salary accounts list an employer letter and KYC questions. Address examples include recent three-month utility bills, residence certificate or lease; the bank chooses accepted evidence.
Nonresident example: passport/ID, address proof, two photos and applicable employer letter, payslips, tax or bank statements. Ecobank says overseas certification and country-specific extras may apply. Obtain the final Côte d’Ivoire branch list before paying for certification.
| Document group | Resident example | Nonresident focus |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Valid passport etc.; foreign-resident permission | Accepted passport and certification |
| Address | Bill, lease or residence proof | Address documents and certification method |
| Account use | Employer letter for salary accounts, etc. | Explain income/source of funds |
| Bank forms | Application, signature card, KYC and photos | Sign the branch-confirmed version |
Six pitfalls causing wasted visits or lost control
SIB’s page is undated; reconfirm before travel. Initial funding remains account money, not automatically a non-refundable fee. Ask about restricted balances and withdrawal timing separately.
| Issue | Possible consequence | Practical remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Mixing resident/nonresident lists | Extra residence/certification files despite apparent completeness | State actual status/stay and request product-specific branch list |
| Using enterprise “Affaires personnelles” funding for a living account | Confusing sole-trader and personal accounts | Get the French product name/use and confirm initial/monthly fees |
| Assuming online pre-opening completes activation | Insufficient attendance time for signing/verification | Book advisor; confirm people and original documents required |
| Intermediary binds their own phone/recovery email | Unable to regain control after departure/staff changes | Use your own lasting contacts/password and verify recovery |
| Assuming Chinese phones receive verification | Payment verification fails when needed | Test SMS/online on day one; ask about overseas login/number change |
| Abandoning an unused account | Contractual charges may continue | Choose retention/closure before leaving; get settlement/closure evidence, not just a cut card |
Four steps from appointment to account details
1: Use official pre-application or a branch, stating nationality, status and use; do not first send your entire passport to an unknown intermediary. 2: Have the advisor confirm originals, copies, certification and attendance, then book.
3: At the branch check name, address, contacts and fees, then sign. NSIA’s final stage includes agreement and RIB. 4: Confirm card, online access, transfer rights and activation; a RIB alone does not activate all functions.
For branch appointments or on-site communication, first see Local business support in Abidjan then confirm scope and fees.
Free opening but continuing costs: two tariff examples
Public tariffs read on 20 October 2026, not guaranteed offers to foreign applicants: NSIA ordinary Compte chèque opening free, classique maintenance XOF 5,400/month TTC(including tax). SGCI July 2026 personal opening free, maintenance 4,950 HT(before tax). Different tax bases cannot rank total cost directly.
NSIA’s monthly maintenance alone times 12 is XOF 64,800/year, excluding card, transfers, withdrawals and other services. Initial deposits and minimum balances are account money, distinct from deducted charges.
NSIA also lists Pack Eco, Pack START and other prices. Do not select the smallest figure alone: confirm foreign-status/use eligibility, inclusions and extras. Describe identical monthly transfers/card/international receipts to both banks and request tax-inclusive itemised quotes.
| Product/item | Published fee | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| NSIA ordinary Compte chèque opening | Free | Not all usage is free |
| NSIA classique maintenance | XOF 5,400/month | TTC tax included; check extras separately |
| SGCI personal Compte chèque opening | Free | July 2026 table |
| SGCI personal Compte chèque maintenance | XOF 4,950/month | HT before tax; not directly comparable to tax-inclusive totals |
Use this appointment brief before visiting
Example brief: “I am Chinese, resident/nonresident, using the account for salary/daily payments. I have these passport, residence and lease files. Please confirm eligible products, originals/certification, attendance, monthly/card fees and my intended payments.” Adapt honestly; do not claim missing files exist.
If utility bills are not in your name, disclose it and ask accepted alternatives; never impersonate with others’ files. The actual branch must specify whether/where nonresident certification is needed. Retain replies/appointment and bring originals from its list.
Opening-day checks
Check name/details on RIB; bind your own durable phone/email, set passwords/verification yourself and ask about number changes/lost cards. Do not let intermediaries keep SMS codes, cards or online credentials.
Run a bank-authorised small test and keep evidence. For salary/international receipts, confirm information with the payer. Never route unexplained company/third-party funds through your personal account.
Three steps for statement or fee disputes
1: Obtain statements, tariff and contract, listing disputed dates, sums and reasons. 2: Submit formally to the bank and keep receipt/reply, not only chat screenshots. 3: If unresolved, check OQSF mediation conditions and show your prior bank complaint.
Mediation eligibility depends on dispute type/procedural status. It is not an opening guarantee or automatic refund. Never send passwords, SMS codes or card security codes as “complaint evidence”, whoever assists you.
Before you act: checklist
- Declare residence status and obtain your applicable list
- Confirm certification before spending or booking attendance
- Get tariff before signing; separate initial funds and fees
- After RIB, verify card, online and transfer rights separately
